Maybe you’ve spent the day dealing with difficult patients, treating serious injuries, or just didn’t sleep well last night. No matter the situation, you may need a little extra positivity during your shift. It’s likely others do too! Here are some simple tips for adding a little more positivity in the workplace:

5 Tips to Maintain Positivity in the Workplace

1. Bring some healthy snacks

Although there’s rarely time to sit down and enjoy a snack during one’s nursing shift, any opportunity to do so will be greatly appreciated. Bring in snacks like oranges, grapes, granola bars, or something you can whip up yourself for some added energy throughout the day. Since it’s a healthcare environment, think of ways to minimize the spread of germs as well as serious nut allergies.

2. Rise and Shine

Starting a shift might very well mean someone is just waking up, even if that’s at 3 in the afternoon or 3 in the morning. No matter what, make an effort to greet other nurses or staff members who may just be clocking in for the day. This can really help others to feel like they are welcomed and really part of the team. Even if you’re nearing the end of your shift and there’s not an ounce of energy left in you, greeting incoming nurses will go a long way.

3. Keep on Smiling

It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book, but a friendly smile is actually a powerful neurological signal that can have some amazing effects! Without getting too in depth, those on the receiving end of a smile often experience a release of dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin that create some biological positivity. In general, smiling at others is something that can have subtle, yet very beneficial impacts on the workplace.

4. Give Compliments

Whether someone made swift work of that IV line or communicated particularly well with a patient, giving constructive compliments is one way to really add some positivity in the workplace. Of course, it’s about using your best judgment, but complimenting someone’s physical appearance in a friendly way can also help to boost someone’s confidence on a level beyond that of nursing. Don’t overdo it, but you really don’t have much to lose by issuing out a few compliments here and there!

5. Check in With Others

Throughout a long shift, it’s easy for nurses to start wearing thin without having an extra bit of motivation or encouragement when they need it. Although it’s not always within someone’s comfort zone, checking in with other coworkers as a shift is dragging on might just make the difference between burning out completely or finding that second wind. To spread positivity in the workplace is to make small gestures that will help to improve interactions on a larger scale.

Sure, it isn’t always possible to function at the very top of your game for every single patient or coworker interaction. However, working to spread positivity in the workplace in basic ways really make a difference. We know that hospitals and medical facilities are frequently very high-stress environments, although there’s something to be said about really making an effort to increase cooperation through random acts of kindness or positivity.

It’s important to keep in mind that not all attempts to spread positivity in the workplace will be successful, at times being met with resistance. That’s something you’ll need to consider as not to frustrate certain people or situations further. Nonetheless, if no one makes any attempt to encourage or support team members then these things may go overlooked longer than is healthy.
