Whether you are just starting a nursing program or graduation is just around the corner, this exam is likely on your mind. While graduating from nursing school is difficult and impressive in its own right, there is one more step that new nurses must complete before beginning their careers. They must pass the NCLEX. This said, you are probably wondering how to prepare for the NCLEX. Well, this is going to vary for every person. First of all, depending on whether you’re taking the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN, you’ll take a different exam. However, even on top of that, different study habits work for different individuals. Regardless, there are a few things to keep in mind the next time you wonder how to prepare for the NCLEX!

How to Prepare for the NCLEX

Do Your Homework on the Exam

It is no secret that we are usually better able to prepare for something when we know what to expect. Before you start really studying for the NCLEX, take some time to learn about the exam itself. How is it structured? How is it administered? What types of questions are usually on the NCLEX? Asking and answering questions like this will allow you to be much more confident as you start your exam preparation. The National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN) provides lots of great resources you can use to learn more about the exam. For example, did you know that the NCLEX-RN is a computer adaptive test that can have anywhere from 75 to 265 items? Knowing what to expect is the best place to start when figuring out how to prepare for the NCLEX.

Identify Study Habits that Work for You

As we mentioned above, every individual responds well to different types of studying. Are you a visual or an audial learner? Do you have to find a way to engage with the material, or is reading about it sufficient for you? By the time you are preparing to take the NCLEX, you are sure to have spent plenty of time in the classroom. So, take some time to reflect upon which study habits have worked for you in the past. If preparation courses offered online or in person are not for you, but self-study with flashcards is, then do that! There is no wrong way to study as long as you start early, dedicate time to it, and are honest with yourself about what you need to work on.

Don’t Let the NCLEX Take Over Your Whole Life

Okay, so it is obviously a good thing to spend plenty of time studying for such an important exam. This said stress is not always a good thing. While some stress can be healthy, too much prevent you from reaching your full potential. Even while you are studying, know that it is important to have a life outside of the NCLEX too. By eating well, exercising regularly, and taking breaks when you need them, you’ll be able to be much more productive in your preparation. So, even if you’re treating your NCLEX preparation as a full-time job, be sure not to work too much overtime.

At the end of the day, the NCLEX is obviously an incredibly important exam. It is the last obstacle between you and your new career as a nurse. However, being successful on the NCLEX requires throughful preparation. As long as you take the time to follow these steps and study in a way that works for you, you’ll be looking for your first nursing job in no time! Though you’ll have to survive the wait between the exam and getting your results first.
