However, there’s no career that really puts the “travel” in travel nurse like a job as a flight nurse. What is a flight nurse? Well, it’s a lot of things. It’s an opportunity to crisscross the country or even the globe. It’s a rewarding career that will allow you to help others. It’s also a financially stable job that will give you the security to pursue other interests and hobbies. During National Nurses Week we wanted to highlight some of the most rewarding nursing careers in the industry. Below we’ll take a look at the ins and outs of being a flight nurse as well as provide some great reasons as to why they’re so important.

What is a Flight Nurse?

Becoming a Flight Nurse

What is a flight nurse? Well, before we can get into the details of what a flight nurse career entails, we first need to think about becoming one. Flight nursing is a unique specialty in that it requires you to be proficient in not just traditional nursing, but emergency nursing as well. When people ask, “what is a flight nurse,” they first need to consider “what makes a good flight nurse?” A flight nurse should be someone who is comfortable thinking on his or her feet. They should also (obviously) be comfortable with flying. You’ll spend a good amount of time in the air, so it’s important that you’re comfortable traveling via plane or helicopter.

To become a flight nurse, you must first get a nursing degree and pass the NCLEX. There are plenty of two and four-year nursing degrees so make sure to explore all of your options. Next, you’ll be required to obtain a graduate degree in emergency nursing. Here you’ll learn how to perform under the pressures that you’ll be faced as a flight nurse. Finally, you’ll need to pass the Certified Flight Registered nurse Examination, which is offered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.

What Do Flight Nurses Do?

Flight nurses as tasked with the very strenuous job of monitoring seriously injured patients. These patients have been injured so grievously that standard ground transportation may risk the patient’s life. Flight nurses stabilize these patients as much as possible, administering emergency care and preparing the patient for treatment. These “life flights” are used to transport patients who have been seriously injured.

Another scenario that a flight nurse might deal with is the transportation of patients from one facility to another. In doing so, flight nurses will pass any necessary paperwork to the receiving medical professionals, update them on the patients’ conditions, and notify them of any problems or medical treatment given during the flight.

Where Do They Work?

Most hospitals in major cities will have an air emergency transport team. This means that flight nurses will often find themselves working on a medical helicopter or a fixed-wing plane. They can also find employment at certain fire rescue stations or search and rescue organizations. Another option is to work as a military flight nurse. If you think that working in the military is something you’d like to do, this is a great career path to consider.

What is the Salary?

What is a flight nurse? While I’m sure you want this question answered, you’re also probably wondering about the financial benefits. Flight nurses can expect to earn between $50,161 and $95,605 annually. The median annual salary for this type of nurse is $68,050. Exact salary amounts depend on location, experience, and type of employer.

Tribute to Flight Nurses

What is a flight nurse? Well, the short answer is that they’re heroes, just like the rest of the nursing field. Flight nurses work in some of the most stressful situations and are required to think quickly and make definitive decisions. They save lives on a daily basis and certainly deserved to be recognized during National Nurses Week. If you know a flight nurse, feel free to comment their name below.
