What is a dialysis nurse? Well, in short, dialysis nurses help treat patients with kidney disease. While this may seem like any other nursing specialty in some ways, it is actually very unique. Dialysis nurses play an integral role in administering life-prolonging, and sometimes life-saving, treatment to patients every day. Not to mention, dialysis nurses often develop relationships with many of their patients since they usually see them on a regular basis. There are many reasons to consider becoming a dialysis nurse.

Nurse in renal unit at hospital starting dialysis on patient

A Tribute to Dialysis Nurses

In the spirit of Nurses Week 2018, we wanted to make a tribute to dialysis nurse. Since these (and all!) nurses fill an extremely important role in our healthcare system, it is important to highlight what they do. Therefore, let’s get down to the details. What is a dialysis nurse after all?

What is a Dialysis Nurse?

Dialysis nurses are registered nurses who have training and experience in nephrology. Nephrology is a field of medicine specifically concerned with the kidneys. However, before beginning nephrology training, future dialysis nurses first have to complete their associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing and pass the NCLEX exam. Obviously, this is easier said than done; yet this is the only way to become a registered nurse. After becoming an RN, those interested in dialysis nursing should explore every clinical opportunity they have that relates to nephrology. With at least 2000 hours of experience, nurses may be eligible for the exam to become a certified dialysis nurse (CDN).

What do Dialysis Nurses do?

After becoming a dialysis nurse, there are a number of different settings where you can practice. Between hospitals, private practice, in-home care, and travel dialysis nurse jobs, there is no shortage of opportunity for variety. However, regardless of where you work, your day-to-day responsibilities will be similar. Ultimately, according to NurseJournal.com, the top five tasks that dialysis nurses perform are as follows: maintaining and examining patient reports and records, monitoring patients for signs of change, administering medications, consulting with physicians and other medical personnel on a decisive plan of action, and planning and implementing patient care.

Dialysis Nurse Salary

According to PayScale.com, the median annual salary for dialysis nurses is $65, 778. While this is lower than the median annual salary for all nurses by about $3,000, dialysis nurses salaries are largely determined by location, experience, and their specific workplace. Plus, it is worth considering the fact that dialysis nurses usually work much more consistent, regular hours than nurses in other specialties. Generally speaking, dialysis nurses who work in hospitals tend to earn significantly more than those in private practice or in-home care. This is because dialysis nurses who work in hospitals often have less regular schedules since they can be called in for emergency dialysis. It is worth mentioning as well that travel dialysis nursing jobs usually pay more than their permanent counterparts!

So, ultimately dialysis nurses are extremely important members of the healthcare community. Almost 10 percent of the United States population is affected by kidney disease. With so many people in need of dialysis, it is no wonder than dialysis nursing is expected to grow by about 26 percent over the next ten years. Of course, as with any job there are both pros and cons. However, as far as dialysis nursing goes, we think the pros outweigh the cons. Whether it is the chance to save patients’ lives or the opportunity to develop relationships with them, there are so many reasons to love the job.
