From emotional exhaustion to chronic workplace stress, nurse burnout has become a common challenge for many healthcare workers within the nursing profession.

Emphasizing the importance of mental health is not a selfish task; it plays an important role in reducing nurse burnout. To prevent nurse burnout, it’s important to recognize early warning signs and emotional symptoms. Keep reading for insights on how to fight nurse burnout, what causes it, and what you can do to prevent it.

What Is Nurse Burnout?

The World Health Organization defines nurse burnout as, “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” There are three dimensions in which this chronic stress is commonly recognized.

The WHO defines them as “energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy.” Burnout is more than just a bad day at work; it is a combination of several factors over a period of time.

Why Is Burnout So Common?

One of the reasons many nurses experience burnout and work-related stress is due to the fast-paced nature of the healthcare system. Staffing shortages, high patient acuity, physical demands, long work hours, emotional strain, or even poor work environments can all be contributing factors to burnout among nurses.

Causes of Nurse Burnout

As previously mentioned, there are several reasons and causes of nurse burnout. Below you’ll find a list of 10 common causes you should familiarize yourself with to help you recognize burnout faster.

#1: Long Hours and Shifts

Whether you’re in a hospital, intensive care unit, rehabilitation center, or an outpatient facility, long hours in any of these settings can be mentally and physically exhausting. The National Library of Medicine shares that nurses working more than 40 hours per week have 3.28 odds of burnout.

After many long shifts and irregular schedules, the last thing you may want to do is interact with others or go out and explore. Inconsistent sleep and limited downtime can severely affect nurses’ recovery and damage their physical and emotional well-being.

#2: Dissatisfaction With Pay

Many jobs within healthcare systems, including nursing professionals, involve working long hours in stressful situations where their pay does not reflect the hard work they are putting in.

When you accept a travel nursing assignment, you sign a contract that locks in pay and responsibilities. In some instances, your assignment may not be what you expected, and you are left with handling extra job responsibilities or other administrative tasks with pay that does not reflect your extra work.

This dissatisfaction with pay scales can lead to nurses feeling undervalued.

#3: Poor Authentic Leadership

Another potential cause of nurse burnout is poor leadership support. Organizational leadership is very important when it comes to job performance and personal accomplishments.

Systemic challenges such as limited communication, difficult workplace dynamics, limited managerial support, and inadequate recognition can increase job dissatisfaction and affect mental health. Nurses may feel unheard or dismissed when they raise concerns that are not addressed.

#4: Poor Work Environments

Poor work environments can significantly contribute to nurse burnout. Poor work environments may be presented through challenging co-worker relationships, limited hospital nurse staffing, demanding schedules and responsibilities, as well as unfair treatment by managers.

Your work environment can have a big impact on the amount of stress you are experiencing day to day, as well as the likelihood of experiencing burnout.

#5: Physical Exhaustion and Fatigue

As mentioned in #1, physical exhaustion is a real concern when it comes to being on your feet all day during a 12-hour shift. These exhausting and demanding shifts, working with patients, co-workers, and in high-stress situations, can make rest and recovery at home more challenging.

Many travel nurses experiencing nurse burnout may have trouble sleeping at night or are experiencing a lack of sleep altogether. This is problematic because rest and recovery are critically needed to provide adequate patient care and treat patients to the best of your ability.

#6: Mental Exhaustion

Mental and emotional exhaustion is another cause of nurse burnout. Being in hospitals or facilities every day for long periods of time exposes you to many different scenes. From sick to challenging patients, nurses go through many interactions that can pile up and damage their own mental health.

For example, if a nurse is consistently working with challenging patients who do not cooperate and make the nurse’s job extremely difficult, it is only natural that the nurse will become frustrated and be at risk of burnout.

#7: Poor Work-Life Balance

Another big cause of nurse burnout is having a poor work-life balance. It is very important to be dedicated to your job and provide great patient care, but it is also important to rest and do activities for yourself while on an assignment.

Whether you go and explore your assignment city, do a hobby, or simply meet up with friends and family, prioritizing your home life is just as important as your work life. If you do not take the time to do this, you are putting yourself at risk for nurse burnout very early.

#8: Facility Intensity

Health care systems have many types of facilities with ranging levels of intensity. Some facilities are very fast-paced and require you to be on your toes and adaptable at all times, while others are more relaxed and allow you to easily but efficiently move through your patients.

Pursuing a facility type that does not fit your nursing style or speed can be a big factor contributing to nurse burnout. By not recognizing what facility type best fits your nursing style and needs, you could be exposed to serious consequences for your mental health, leading to nurse burnout.

#9: Heavy Workloads and Staffing Shortages

Do you find yourself running out of time during the day due to all of your tasks and responsibilities? If you answered yes, you may have too much work on your plate.

It’s important to have several responsibilities and tasks in your assignment, as this builds leadership and diligence, but it should not be unmanageable to the point that it is affecting your mental health.

This is why it is so important for a facility to have adequate staffing ratios. If your facility is short on nurse staffing, many of the responsibilities are piled up and assigned to a small number of nurses, increasing the risk of burnout.

#10: Death and Sickness

A downside of working in healthcare is frequent exposure to patient mortality. Constant sickness, illness, or death of patients not only affects nurses in their professional lives, but in their personal lives as well.

Registered nurses and other nursing assistants may experience stronger feelings of burnout in this area when working in emergency departments or intensive care units. Many times, nurses experiencing burnout due to death and sickness struggle to manage their stress and may need more emotional support.

An unfortunate and difficult aspect of this job is that you must continue doing your job despite the situations that happen around you.

Burnout Impact on Patient Care

Experiencing nurse burnout does not just impact the nurse themselves; it can impact the patients they are caring for in harmful ways. Because burnout leads to a lack of motivation and care, it can lead to a lack of empathy for patients.

As mentioned above, long hours on rotation without proper staffing also have an impact on both nurses and patients. If a nurse is working 12-hour shifts and is caring for many patients at once, it can result in lower patient satisfaction.

Nurse burnout also increases medical errors, which ultimately jeopardizes patient safety. Patient safety is the top priority when working in health care systems. If nurse burnout leads to any patients being harmed, this can result in negative consequences such as getting suspended or losing your license.

Even though your role as a care provider is to treat patients and work hard, you must put your own needs first and recognize when you should seek help or step back to breathe and evaluate your situation.

How to Fight and Prevent Nurse Burnout

Now that we’ve covered some of the leading causes of nurse burnout, it’s time to talk about what you can do to manage and prevent it!

Make Self-Care a Priority

Almost 70% of nurses under 25 report experiencing burnout. A simple and easy way to combat these feelings of burnout, especially in younger nurses, is to prioritize self-care. Self-care can be demonstrated in many ways, including a calming face mask, reading your favorite book, watching your favorite movie, or simply lighting a candle and enjoying the calm.

Finding ways to create calm atmospheres that allow you to relax is essential for resetting your mental health. Simply taking a second to practice deep breathing is a great way to practice self-care. Here is a checklist of self-care activities for you to try the next time you need a reset.

Protect Sleep and Physical Health

Making sure you are getting enough sleep at night is a big contributor to managing stress. When your body is exhausted, you are not able to perform your best. Best practices for recovering after a long shift include sticking to a wind-down routine and getting at least 8 hours of sleep.

Click here to learn more about the best practices and ideas to include in your nighttime routine to feel rejuvenated and well-rested!

Set Healthy Boundaries

Another way to help prevent nurse burnout is to set healthy boundaries with your co-workers and facility managers. This can be done by encouraging open communication. Having open communication makes it much easier to address challenges, discuss expectations, and provide feedback.

By setting boundaries, you are promoting a healthier workplace environment from the get-go that will help to prevent nurse burnout!

Build a Support System

Building a support system is one of the best practices to help reduce nurse burnout. You may seek comfort from an internal workplace support system or a personal support system, such as family.

Ways your internal support system can help boost your morale include meaningful recognition, hard work, and accomplishment. Many times, peer support networks are effective in reducing emotional exhaustion among nurses experiencing burnout too!

Leaning on family and friends while having feelings of burnout can also help reset your mindset. Sometimes, you just need to express everything you’re feeling to the close people you trust to truly feel better.

Implement Stress Management Techniques

A simple, yet effective, way to decrease nurse burnout is through stress management techniques. Stress management techniques can be anything from deep breathing to walking, journaling, physical activity, or even doing a hobby you enjoy.

Stress management techniques don’t have to be rocket science. This can simply be stepping back, taking time for yourself, and doing something you enjoy.

It’s important to remember that stress management techniques won’t solve nurse burnout, but they help nurses cope with those everyday pressures. Check out this list of 100 stress management techniques you can implement and practice during your next assignment.

Remember Why You Love Nursing

If you’re experiencing nurse burnout, take a deep breath, and remember why you love to do what you do! Whenever you started your career, go back in time and envision your first day on the job. What were you most excited for?

Treating your first patient? Seeing your hard work pay off? Learning from your co-workers? Whatever your why was, flashback to that moment and remember what inspired you to become a nurse in the first place!

Even when the job becomes tough, remember the positive impact you make on the world and the patients around you. The care you provide to a patient may be even bigger than you realize. Relearning what you love about nursing can help you find your motivation again and remind you why your work really matters.

Seek Professional Help

If you’re experiencing nurse burnout and don’t know where to turn or what to do, try seeking out extra help from a counselor or therapist. It is completely normal to speak with these professionals about persistent stressors in your life; that’s their job!

Your company or facility may have or provide other available resources such as employee assistance programs, peer-support groups, and even workplace mental health benefits. Access to mental health resources is essential for managing burnout.

No matter which services you may try out, remember that asking for help is a proactive step and not a sign of weakness.

Celebrate World Mental Health Day!

As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, remember that you are not alone! Take the time to check in on yourself and your fellow co-workers, schedule time for yourself, or even explore mental health resources.

Mental health deserves attention throughout the whole year, not just one day. Your well-being matters just as much as the care you provide to others.

You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup

Nurse burnout is very common in the healthcare industry. Knowing how to recognize, address, and prevent it can help keep you ahead of the game and keep you from experiencing burnout.

Nurses spend a lot of time caring about other people’s needs; it can be easy to forget about your own.
