Typical Day at West Alabama Mental
A typical day at West Alabama Mental Health Center consisted of talking with consumers, consumer family members, co-workers, and collaborating with other agencies to provide adequate care to mental health consumers. I learned that a job teaches a lot more about the field than any classroom could prepare one for. The best part about being in the field is being willing to take challenges because with each challenge, one learns something helpful for future references. The hardest part about my job was not being able to provide the help my consumers and family members desired because of inadequate funds from partner agencies. The most enjoyable part of my job as a case manager with West Alabama had to be taking the consumers on outings and participating in holiday gatherings. On the outings the consumers are given a chance to prove what they've learned in day habilitation and they often feel accomplished. Their excitement excites me. At holiday gathering, all of the consumers from each county gather together and mingle. The consumers usually talk about the party for weeks to a month after. The experience with working with intellectually disabled individuals was an overall rewarding experience.
Really enjoyable environment with lots of helpful employees
I really enjoyed my time at the Mental Health Center, and it was mainly because our department in Case Management were so close. We really built great working relationships with one another. A typical day consisted of lots of driving and picking up clients. We were responsible for taking the clients where they need to go, appointments, doctors office, picking up medication, to the bank to cash checks. Because the clients were seriously mentally ill, it got a little challenging if they were not current with their medication, but overall, this was a great place to work.

Innovative and culturally diverse.
I would update files and manuals. I would answer employee questions via e-mail, telephone, and in our office. I would spend most of my mornings working on various projects such as, time audits, writing dismissal or termination letters, and budget analysis. I learned a lot about how to interact with people. I learned a lot about work- life balance and cultural diversity in the workplace. The management was prompt in returning calls and emails and they were available to their employee's. My co-workers were good, most did their work and kept to themselves for the most part. They would teach me how to do tasks if i needed the help. The most enjoyable part of the job was the diversity of work and people. I felt challenged everyday.

Check wit clients first thing in the morning . Make sure they are well taken care of before one employeer leaves. Teach them how to take care of themselves. Take them places when needed.
