Diverse and meaningful work in long-term treatment setting

Challenging and fulfilling work with patients and families affected by serious and persistent mental illness. In a typical workday, one might go from grief counseling, to assisting clients with medication education, or coping skills, to fun and healthy recreational activities. One very important thing I learned early on, is the importance of listening first, and second, and always. Active and empathetic listening must come before any attempts to give feedback, or education, etc. It is the basis of partnering with clients and families.I have much respect for the co-workers, supervisors and managers I worked with in the common effort to provide the best, most compassionate care possible to the clients, whom we viewed as a very special population. The most difficult part of the job was when personal tragedy occurred in the lives of our clients. The most enjoyable part was making a real, positive difference in clients' lives, for example when sufficient progress was made to enable discharge back to the community
