Great coworkers but HR department leaves much to be desired

Loved working at CVAMC for 6 years. My co workers were amazing and supportive. The best part of my jobs was caring for my vets. They taught me so much about life. The most difficult part was dealing with staffing shortages. We were almost always short staffed. I had a huge issue with HR because they never put my retirement in the system therefore I did not receive one penny into my retirement account. Huge problem.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is an excellent place for an advanced nursing practice career.

Ones day is very busy at the VA. In primary care there is a scheduled day of patient visits but you have to be flexible for add on patients and you may be asked to cover the Urgent Care or another provider as well. I learned to think fast on my feet and to be very flexible. My managers were supportive of my role and willing to help with career advancement. Co-workers at the VA are the best. I have learned that your experience with others is a reflection of how you treat others. The hardest part of my job was finding enough time to accomplish everything the Veteran patient deserved. The most enjoyable part of my job was seeing positive outcomes for my patients.
