Terri... It varies. Many facilities simply don't care if you're "local" while other have a 50 to 75-mile radius rule. It is facility specific. Feel free to call us at 800-245-9414 and we'll let you know what the "rule" is for any specific job you may be considering.

There is no distance per the IRS. It has to do with whether or not you can prove duplication of housing expenses. Most companies use 50 miles. We use 76 miles or more. 50-75 miles only allows you to receive 2/3 of the stipend money. Call me if you'd like more information.

In order to get stipends (tax free) you have to travel greater than 50 miles from your permanent address... however we do local contracts as well.. but it would be on a straight taxable rate.

As far as the IRS is concerned there isn't a "50 mile" rule. To receive tax free stipends you have to travel a reasonable distance and incur duplicate expenses. Some Hospitals do have rules on how far a nurse must live from campus to be considered a traveler. They then would have different rates for Travel RN's versus Local contracts.

The general rule is 50 miles but some facilities will be 75 or even 100 miles. Where are you looking to go?

Typically, the distance is 55 miles; however, some facilities will have their own travel restrictions and may expand that radius to 200+ miles away. Your recruiter can clarify once he/she knows where you are interested in taking a travel contract, Take care!

Hi, to be considered for a travel position, there are some facilities that have mile radius rules. Usually it's 50 miles as you are duplicating expenses. Some hospitals have larger radius rules such as 75 or 100 miles. Everything should be discussed with you during conversations with a recruiter so you know which hospitals you would be eligible for especially if you lived near by.

The IRS has guidelines and each travel company has slightly different rules. But in general it;'s 50-75 miles away from your permanent tax home. And some hospitals will have additional radius rules (80-100 is common) And as a traveler your are "expected to have incurred duplicate housing expenses". Meaning if you or you company was audited then you each would need to show that your tax free money/housing stipend/per diem was used for housing expenses. And as you can imagine, being only 50 miles or 50 minutes away could raise some red flags for the IRS and federal government in that you are staying in an apartment when you work only an hour away. Ultimatly the tax free money is designed to cover your duplicate housing expenses while away from home. And the portion your employer can give you depends on the coast of living in the different counties across the country. remember the federal government wants their portion of your wages via taxes...so the safes bet is to ask what millage rules your company uses and stick with assignments that are beyond that millage.

The answer varies from facility to facility. Most facilities have a 50 mile rule, meaning to work at their facility as a Travel RN, your perm home must be 50 miles or more from their campus. Some facilities have even stronger guidelines and require up to 150 miles. A small handful require RNs have a perm address outside of the state in which the hospital is based. However, most follow the 50 mile rule. Please do let us know of any other questions we can answer for you. Thanks, Crystal Lovato

It depends on the vendor! Some dont have radius rules, but in general its 50 to 100 miles. In order to take advantage of one of the great perks of travel nursing, the tax advantage program, the IRS requires you to live 60 miles from the address where you file taxes.

Terri, Most usually it would be 50 miles or greater. There are some facilities that require a 150 mile radius from your home to the facility, but those are few.
