Acute Hospital Care

Typical hospital setting:Self Scheduling 80% of time (8 weeks advance)12 hour shiftsStaffing based on patient census, therefore usually requesting either overtime and extra weekends (higher census) or dropping people to cover lower census.Hospital changing focus to include pediatrics along with women's healthcare.

Great place to start my nursing career.

Staff Rn on a med/surg unit. Learned a lot and had some wonderful older nurses who took me under their wing and really helped me. It was a fast pace unit and we had an outpatient chemo area that we were responsible for as well. That involved administration of chemo and blood products as well as obtaining any labs needed. Management was going through some critial times, but my co-workers were wonderful. The hardest part of the job was just being a new nurse at the time. The most enjoyable part was the girls I worked with and the teamwork they showed me.
