Veteran Medical Center

I provide care and support to disabled veterans who are placed in the Medical Center for various reasons. I've learned how to provide more efficient and personable care according to the individual needs of each veteran. My co-workers offer insight and assistance to help ensure that the care provided is accurate and completed in the safest manner. Management could be more involved with the training of new employees to ensure the department has staff who are properly trained. I'm a quick learner and self starter so I can adapt but their should be more adequate training by qualified individuals and management should follow up to make sure. I enjoy helping the veterans. They have a lot of different personalities and background that I find fascinating.

A very good team and supportive environment.

A day the Hampton VA can vary from very busy to very slow. Overall it is a great functioning hospital especially the Cardiology Department. It was very interesting to get to ask the Cardiologist of certain pathology's and they would have no problems giving me answers. I learned a different atmosphere as far as patients and I feel it will make me a better person. My co-workers were always helpful also especially with me being a student, they never got flustered with my many questions. The hardest part of the job was the disconnect between each department. The disconnect would prolong the wait til thus making patients uneasy and tired. The most enjoyable part was hearing all the hero's who have served stories.

Challenging and Rewarding

The supervision staff, overseeing day to day clinical activities of interns, take a personal interest in ensuring that students receive the most comprehensive, well-rounded experience possible, dedicating their passion to their intern's education and to ensuring our Veterans receive the best possible care and compassion.Working with our Veterans, whether they are unemployed, homeless, suffering legal difficulties or mental health diagnoses, has been the most humbling and rewarding experience of my career, one that will remain with me throughout. The best part of my job at the Hampton VA Medical Center is that there is no typical day at work. I have been able to utilize every Counseling skill I obtained in my college career, and have been able to perfect skills I already possessed such as Time-Management, excellent and concise written and oral communication and empathy. The hardest part of this job has been to accept that not every story can be a success story.
