Shifts are a rotation of nights and mids, 1900-0700 and 1100-2300. Every other weekend is mandatory. First-time travelers will be accepted. Patient ratio is 1:5. Locals are not accepted from within a 75-mile radius. The unit is an 11-bed medical emergency department with a separate behavioral health space. The behavioral health space contains two areas: an evaluation space for up to 6 patients and an Extended Obs space for 2 patients. A nurse, PCT, and a behavioral health team staff the area at all times if patients are present. Patients are triaged and medically cleared before entering this space. They may require labs or EKG while in this space. Staff typically work 6-hour blocks during the day and mids. During nights, shifts may extend to 12 hours in the behavioral health area. Security personnel are present in the emergency department. This position involves working with a diverse patient age group, including adolescents, infants, adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics. The daily census involves approximately 40 visits. The unit participates in interdisciplinary support services, including physical therapy, respiratory services, social services, pharmacy, and rapid response teams. Patients present with mostly acute and chronic conditions, including behavioral health crises. Special equipment used in the unit includes translator devices, ultrasound-guided IVs, and blood warmers. Candidates must have experience managing patients with conditions such as drug overdose, seizures, and traumatic injuries. This role requires the ability to manage multi-system organ failure and apply splints, among other nursing skills. The facility sees a variety of emergency cases on a daily basis, including trauma and urgent medical issues.
