Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 18 weeks Shift: Day/Night variable shifts (3x12s) + On Call shifts Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Two years acute hospital experience as a Registered Nurse; One year Emergency Department experience as a Registered Nurse License: State Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (must be AHA or RQI) Must-Have: Two years experience serving as a Registered Nurse, with at least one year in an Emergency Department environment Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. The ED RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate for managing life-threatening and routine emergencies. The ED RN utilizes principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups and their families. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage to identify initial management and assign priority of care in accordance with established standards. He/She establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs, detects and documents deviations from the norm, and identifies necessary steps and interventions. He/She uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, and data to conduct secondary assessments. The ED RN identifies contributing factors, health history, and events preceding emergent health events. He/She assesses psychosocial needs, documents any suspicions of domestic violence or abuse, and reassesses the patient to evaluate response to treatment. The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible outcomes. He/She teaches others and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands the responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments and makes referrals for post-emergency care. The ED RN assesses patient and family learning styles and structures education sessions accordingly. He/She evaluates retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, recognizing them as the central focus of care. He/She embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed of the care process and anticipates their needs throughout the emergency visit. He/She maintains awareness of the patient’s condition throughout their stay in the Emergency Department.
