The unit has a total of 28 beds. Patient types and common diagnoses include orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, trauma, vascular surgery, and medical overflow. Patient ratios are typically RN: 1:4-6, with surge times possibly increasing to 1:7-8. A general post-surgical skill set is required, including incision care, assessment, managing drains and chest tubes, wound care, mobility education, trach care, NG tube insertion, and the use of braces/traction. Support within the department includes CNAs for phlebotomy, ADLs, and Foley care. The charge nurse provides indirect support as able. IV/VAT team and mentor support will be available to assist with policy information. There are 24/7 resources including a respiratory therapy team and hospitalists. Remote telemetry monitoring is also provided. A house supervisor is available for additional support and resources. Patient Safety Attendants and virtual patient observation are utilized for patients requiring extra observation. The Behavioral Response Team is deployed to assist with de-escalation measures. A rapid response/code team is available for changes in patient condition, respiratory, or cardiac arrest. Technology and equipment include EMR, IV pumps, med dispensing systems, and patient monitors. Float requirements may include other facilities within the region as needed. Weekend rotation is every other weekend, and holiday expectations include working 75% of the holidays. RTO can be approved up to 6 days off, excluding holidays, and must be added to the end of the contract if the contracted hours cannot be met. The schedule cycle is 6 weeks.
