Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse in the SICU. The unit has 10 beds. Patient types include respiratory failure, stroke, sepsis, renal failure, diabetes, neuro cases such as craniotomies, spinal surgery, traumatic brain injury, and surgical patients in various specialties including general, total joints, urology, and neuro. The typical patient ratio is one nurse to two patients. Travelers must pass an EKG competency exam as part of compliance prior to arrival. There is support on the unit, including a charge nurse who will take a patient assignment. Phlebotomy services are not available on the unit, but an IV/VAT team is available for PICC/midline placement. Resource nurses are present, along with respiratory therapy available 24/7 and in-house hospitalists. The charting system is Meditech Expanse, and IV pumps are Alaris with medication dispensing via Pyxis. Travelers may float to stepdown, stroke units, or med-surg units to ensure comfortability. Scheduling includes a weekend rotation every other weekend and may require working four days one week followed by three days the next week. Time off requests are limited to seven days, and only one weekend of time off may be requested per 13-week contract. Holiday expectations include working two out of three major holidays. Professionalism is mandatory with no cell phone usage in patient care areas, earbuds cannot be worn, and no eating at the desk is allowed. Scrub color is pewter, and acceptable t-shirt colors are gray, white, or black. Badges must be worn above the waist and in full view at all times. The culture on the unit is traveler-friendly.
