About the Position
Job Title: RN - First Assistant Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: First Assistant Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Shift Hours per Shift: 0630-1500 with after hours on-call Experience: 1-2 years preferred License: Registered Nurse licensure in the state of practice required Certifications: - Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) certification preferred - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved vendor required - Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification required - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred Must-Have: - Completion of an RNFA program that meets AORN standards required - Two years' perioperative nursing experience preferred Description: Organizes and facilitates patient care in the Operating Room (OR). Coordinates overall care between the surgical team and room staff. Functions as a first assistant during surgical procedures for which privileges have been granted. Participates in preoperative assessment and planning in collaboration with healthcare team members. Demonstrates expertise regarding medication, treatment, and patient care standards. Performs circulating and scrubbing duties. Confirms surgical site before induction of anesthesia. Accurately performs all counts of sponges, needles, sharps, and instruments according to policy. Handles and dissects tissues in collaboration with the surgeon. Clamps blood vessels, coagulates bleeding points, and ligates vessels in collaboration with the surgeon. Sutures muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon. Places drains as indicated and assists with cannulation and decannulation procedures if needed. Assists with patient transfer to and from the OR, positioning, prepping, and draping. Provides a safe and aseptic environment by applying principles of aseptic technique. Takes corrective action to rectify breaks in aseptic technique. Inspects sterile items before use and maintains the sterility of items during delivery to the sterile field. Obtains and interprets patient data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as needed. Develops and implements action plans for practice changes to enhance patient outcomes. Maintains appropriate traffic patterns and personnel around the sterile field. Applies appropriate methods and parameters of sterilization and disinfection. Observes for cleanliness in the Operating Room and takes necessary action. Prepares instruments according to physician preferences and scheduled procedures. Utilizes knowledge and skills in a surgical environment to assist the surgeon. Works under minimal supervision. Documents relevant data including nursing diagnoses, patient care plans, interventions, and discharge plans. Mentors, develops, inspires, educates, and leads staff members in the patient care setting. Identifies opportunities to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the role. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Commits to the safety and wellbeing of patients and associates through required vaccinations. Medical and religious exemptions may apply. Participates in the employment verification process as necessary. Ensures adherence to all relevant department functions related to operating room services.
