About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Duration: 26 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Must have level 1 trauma experience. Must have previous travel experience (no first-time travelers). Must have prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit. Description: This position involves providing care to patients with neurological conditions. Common patient diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience cases. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during the night shift. A charge nurse is available 24/7, who typically does not take an assignment unless staffing is below required ratios. There is also a house supervisor present at all times. Nursing aides and patient care techs are available on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 at night. RNs are required to titrate drips, specifically a heparin titrated drip based on PTT. Experience with heparin gtt is required. High-flow oxygen is rarely used, primarily for stable COVID cases. Telemetric monitoring is house-wide, so RNs are not required to read strips. Shifts consist of 12-hour workdays, with a weekend requirement of every other weekend. Holiday work is also required on an every other basis. Floating to general units may occur; nurses will only perform skills they are competent with if floated outside their unit. There is no specific scrub color requirement. Tattoos must be covered while on duty, and facial piercings are not allowed, except for ear piercings. Orientation for new staff includes training on the computer system, unit-specific processes, and time spent with a preceptor caring for patients.
