Unit Overview
The Fifth Floor Gastrointestinal (GI)/COVID Medical/Surgical Unit is a 34-bed acute care unit that provides comprehensive medical-surgical care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients with gastrointestinal disorders and other acute medical conditions.
Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides safe, patient-centered nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized treatment plans for patients admitted to the Medical/Surgical GI Unit. The RN collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality care while ensuring patient safety and positive clinical outcomes.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized nursing care plans.
- Monitor and care for patients with acute gastrointestinal and general medical/surgical conditions.
- Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other prescribed treatments safely.
- Monitor vital signs, laboratory values, and patient responses, reporting significant changes promptly.
- Provide wound care, ostomy care, enteral feeding management, and postoperative nursing care as needed.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, discharge instructions, and disease management.
- Collaborate with physicians, case managers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and changes in patient condition.
- Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and hospital quality standards.
- Float to other compatible Medical/Surgical units based on patient care needs, if required.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of recent Medical/Surgical nursing experience.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Current AHA BLS certification (Required).
- AHA ACLS certification (Preferred).
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, communication, and patient care skills.
- Experience caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations is preferred.
