Great place to work.

I enjoyed my position at the hospital. I learned new computer programs and my co-workers were very friendly.

Great co-workers, Horrible Management

Coworkers are outgoing, friendly, and helpful.Like most hospitals, some departments are better to work for than others. Unfortunately, there seems to be a very large disconnect between workers and management. The upper-level management seems out of touch and the mid-level management is unlikely to provide support when needed. Anybody that 'makes waves' tends to be let go. Report any problems, even through proper channels, and you are likely to be reprimanded or terminated. Good place to work if you can handle unstable, unreliable management and the feeling of being alone when something goes wrong.

Excellant nursing staff on my unit....Oncology.

One day last week I sat at the bedside of a dying man in his 40's. It was very sad to see his mom and dad sitting by and watching their son die. As I sat there feeding this man, we began to talk about things he had done with his father. He liked fishing and working on cars. His mom and dad joined in our conversation; we were having a good time talking about this man and the life he had lived and the fact that he was leaving to go to the Hospice house soon and how they all felt about his dying. It gave them peace and some closure to know their son would receive good care there as he did at our hospital. I fed him some jello and half a glass of tea. His dad said that was he first real food he had in the last 2 weeks, other than being on a tube feeding in the intensive care unit. The patient was glad to have 1 on 1 attention to be fed as he was too weak to feed himself. He was very appreciative of the time and care I was spending with him in his last few hours of life. And I was very appreciative that my co-workers were picking up the slack by caring for my other 6 patients so I could spend time with this man and his family so that they would know that at Winter Haven Hospital you are more than just a room number; that you are a real person and will be treated with compassion and respect; your needs will be attended to on a personal level. This is why I went into nursing 32 years ago...to provide comfort to those who need it when they need it most. At the age of 52...I have spent the last 32 years being an LPN....I enjoy being a nurse.
