Love the teamwork but overly demanding job

The Surgical Care Unit is a very fast paced unit to work on. A skilled nurse would have a very demanding job mentally and physically. The patient:nurse ratio is 6:1 (however management will say it is 5:1. rarely does that happen). Currently we have been short 2-3 nurses a shift requiring to pull from the float pool nurses. Some of the nurses feel over worked and feel as if management keeps putting on more responsibilities to the nurses. The patient acuity level is very high. With the way the floor is designed, it is impossible to do nursing assignments by acuity. The team work on the night shift (the shift I work) is by far one of the best teams to be on. The nurses and aides all work together very well. The team work is what keeps the nurses on the floor.
