Fast-Paced Nursing Jobs

I always like to think there are two types of people. There’s the type that likes to ease into things. They enjoy relaxing and reading a good book and lounging around when they have the time. Then there are the movers. They’re the ones that constantly need to be doing something. Whether it’s cleaning, exercising, or simply just staying active, they despise staying still for longer than necessary. If you’re the latter, and in the healthcare field, particularly nursing, you might want to consider some of these fast-paced nursing jobs. While these jobs can often be stressful, they’ll certainly be guaranteed to keep you up and moving while providing the best possible care. Below are just a few fast-paced nursing jobs to consider.

Fast-Paced Nursing Jobs

ER Nurse

Some of the most popular and well known fast-paced nursing jobs are ER nurses. ER nurses are registered nurses (RNs). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), demand for all types of RNs is expected to grow 19 percent between 2012 and 2022, faster than average for U.S. occupations. The median yearly compensation for an RN is $65,470, according to BLS. About 30% of nurses in the U.S. are Emergency Nurses, who specialize in rapid assessment and treatment when every second is crucial to a patient’s survival, especially during the first stage of illness or injury.

As an ER nurse, you will work directly with ER doctors and help to maintain the health of patients. You will also relay information to friends and family of the patient. While you’ll usually work a similar shift every day, you can expect that no two days will be the same. This is one of the most important aspects of becoming an ER nurse. Fast paced nursing jobs like these require the ability to multitask and think on your feet. In addition to dosing meds, emergency room nurses may help with medical treatment for everything from sore throats to kidney infections. Nurses may also assist with minor medical procedures as part of the treatment response, helping to stabilize a patient, and assist the doctor with everything from suturing wounds to intubating critical patients.

Flight Nursing

When it comes to fast-paced nursing jobs, flight nursing is one career that many have never even heard about. Flight nurses get to travel across the country, and even the world in some cases. Designated to help passengers with any immediate health issues they may have, flight nurses will be forced to think quickly at 10,000 feet in the air. Daily duties of a flight nurse can include cleaning the on-call rooms, cleaning out the office and refrigerator, washing the aircraft, and checking all expiration dates of all equipment/medications. Training comes on-the-job, though some programs offer flight simulation training. As a flight nurse, you do basically everything you’d do in an ER or ICU, but in a much smaller space and with fewer resources and personnel. This is a great way to not only explore the world but to provide stellar care for those who desperately need it in life-threatening situations.

Urgent Care Nursing

While it’s usually a little less stressful than an ER nurse, when it comes to fast-paced nursing jobs, urgent care might be the perfect fit for you. Urgent care is one of the fastest growing segments in health care, according to a report published in November 2015 by research firm IbisWorld. Almost 90% percent of urgent care centers—a.k.a. “walk-in clinics”—expected patient visits to increase and had plans for expansion in the coming year, according to Becker’s Hospital Review. Urgent care gives you the chance to help diagnose and fix a variety of injuries and ailments. Get experience in a fast-paced setting today.
