Even as a travel nurse, there are times when you’ll be in between assignments or simply want to save a little on the side for a special trip. There are quite a few things you can do – using your degree and otherwise – to bump your income. Here are six side hustles for nurses who travel.

1. Health Coaching

Health coaching is something that’s growing in popularity that is perfect for healthcare workers. That’s why it is number one on our list of side hustles for nurses who travel. This would be using your passion for helping people but applying it in a slightly different way than nursing. You do need to get certified to work as a health coach, but basically your role would be to work with people and help them improve their overall wellness. This could mean coming up with work out routines for them, teaching them how to work on a balanced diet, and holding them accountable on their wellness journey.

2. Open an Etsy Shop

If you’re crafty, you could set up your own Etsy Shop. What’s great about this is that you can literally do it from anywhere. Plus, if you’re already spending time creating something as a hobby, why not bump it up a notch and start making money from it too?

3. Blogging or Freelance Writing

If you’re good at writing, there are plenty of media outlets out there who need a professional perspective when it comes to healthcare. You could try starting your own blog – lots of people like to hear about travel nurses and their adventures. You could also freelance and write blogs or article for websites or print publications. This is also something that is convenient for you to do while you are traveling.

4. Create a YouTube Channel

If you’re not the best at writing but you still feel like you have a story or perspective worth sharing, try YouTube! There are so many nurses on there who are making YouTube their side hustle. Once you get a few videos out there and build a real presence, there are plenty of companies out there who’d be willing to pay you to advertise their brand on your channel. This is something that takes time and a unique marketing skillset. However, if you can get your YouTube channel to really take off, it’s a nice side income – plus you can put valuable information out there to help others who are considering travel nursing.

Oh, don’t want people watching you? You could always start a podcast instead!

5. Bar tending or serving

Everyone knows if you have experience in bar tending or serving, you can usually find a job pretty quickly even if you hop from town to town. Restaurants often experience high turnover in staff, and if you are travel nursing in a tourist town it will be even easier to pick up some extra work. Not only is this a great way to make additional income, but it’s also a good way to meet the locals and get out into the community more, outside of the medical setting.

6. Nannying

Although you might not be able to be someone’s nanny 9-5 Monday through Friday or anything, it is possible to pick up random babysitting shifts to earn extra cash. Many people struggle to find someone reliable and trustworthy to watch their children. Instead of calling that teenager down the street to come over to kid sit while they go out for date night, they might feel more comfortable calling you. You are, however, a nurse, which makes you responsible and you know what to do if something goes really wrong!
