I only have California RN license, do i need to get like compact license to work in hawaii? What’s their ratio for medical/surgical unit?. Thanks

Hi Stephanie! At this time, both Hawaii and California are not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Since you currently hold a California RN license, you would need to apply for and obtain a separate Hawaii state RN license before you can work there.
As for nurse-to-patient ratios, Hawaii follows California-style staffing ratio laws, which are among the most regulated in the U.S. On a med/surg unit, the required ratio is 1 nurse to 5 patients. Keep in mind, though, that actual staffing levels may vary slightly depending on the facility’s policies and patient acuity.
