Ruled with an iron fist!

Care for patients with extreme mental health challenges. Many violent patients that do not redirect well. It takes a very strong person to work in this invironment. Management rules with an iron fist, do not even think you are going to show up for work one minute late! Very hard work for okay pay. A great place for new graduating nurses who need cash to pay back those loans!

Challenging nursing

I worked with forensic pts from all over Ohio. Most of these were felons with multiple charges. Multiple diagnosis. I enjoy the psychiatric setting and in particular difficult cases. The co-workers at this level requires extreme patience and skill. My co-workers were that as well as good friends. The hardest part of the job was the danger involved.And the most enjoyable part was being able to take that same patient and provide good care, and see the change occur and many times their appreciation.

Where do I begin? For starters, you are working with violent offenders who have been sent to summit from jail. This would be fine if they implemented measures like jails to ensure safety of employees. Doctors under medicate patients who are prone to violent behavior. This results in so many unnecessary injuries to employees. I’ve been attacked by a patient, and the patient was never moved from the unit, or given medications to calm down. I was made to stay and finish my shift after being given two black eyes. I’ve seen other employees have their noses broken, faces split open, arms and hands broken etc. All because these dangerous criminals are allowed to run amok with ZERO repercussions on the forensic units. Patients easily hop the desks and have access to staff behind the nurses station. There was recently almost a full blown riot in the cafeteria where a patient was also caught with a sort of “shank” which he intended to use and stab other patients and staff. Staff went hands on and subdued the patients and avoided a major incident. The administration had nothing to say other than staff was “too rough” when going hands on. None of the patients were injured by staff restraining them. Administration has no idea what it’s like to actually work with this demographic. They are more concerned about coddling the criminals than protecting the staff who put their lives in danger every day. Liz Banks, the CEO wont walk out into any of the units because she is fearful of the patients. However, she will not implement basic safeguards, and expects staff to accept whatever nonsense she dictates. A patient was recently discharged and no shelter or group home could take the patient at the time. They took the patient to a motel, paid for 3 days and just left. This patient is non English speaking and was thrown out like garbage and set up for failure in the community. Several years ago a doctor was beaten almost to death by a patient which resulted in her being permanently disabled, and she ultimately died because of the negligence of administration to properly protect staff. When you are hired, you are on probation for a year, with no union protection. Yet, they deduct union fees from your pay during that year. Without union protection, this gives administration free reign to fire you at anytime for any reason. I’ve seen employees fired for clocking in one minute late. It is nearly impossible to use your vacation time, or comp time and personal days. They rarely approve time off. You’re forced to call off sick if you need a day off. Mandations are outrageous here. They never staff properly, so when there are call offs, they force you to stay and work the next shift. They can and will mandate you as you are about to walk out the door. Refusing a mandation is grounds for termination. There are times when staff is mandated twice a week to work the next shift. The units are oftentimes filthy. Housekeeping is not done regularly. Housekeepers have often refused to come to the units because they fear for their safety. The hospital has a mold and bug problem. Mold is oftentimes just painted over. Patients go without towels, washcloths, and bed linen, there are days when linen closets are not properly stocked. Same for things like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and soap. There have been times where we are out of hygiene products for days at a time.
