Provides strong patient advocacy and liaison to the community. SPECIFIC SKILLS NEEDED Excellent verbal and written skills. Knowledge of medical terminology, infection control and safety. Thorough knowledge of chemo therapy regimens and pharmaceuticals for treatment. Expansive knowledge of hematology/oncology processes and practices. Current CPR certification. Superb understanding of nursing principles. Excellent understanding of patient/family teaching principles. Responds to and appropriately document phone calls for practitioner s pertaining to patient questions and practitioner inquires including: prescription refills and laboratory results, voicemail, clinical messages throughout the day. Provide patient education as appropriate within scope of practice. Pleasantly greet and direct patients to proper exam/treatment room; prepare and instruct patients for examinations and other procedures; enter appropriate data into medical record (vital signs, reason for visit, etc.) Assist practitioner with procedures and other tasks as directed; perform diagnostic tests as directed; start IV s as directed, perform phlebotomy including picc line and ports as needed. Maintain hygiene of patient pic and port lines with proper sterilization techniques. Maintain, clean and/or sterilize medical equipment and instruments; clean exam rooms between patient visits. Responsible for all quality assurance requirements and maintenance of CBC equipment. Draw and administer medications as ordered and record appropriately; responsible for maintenance of medication flow sheet to determine accurate scheduling of injections for each individual patient. Order and maintain inventories of supplies and medications; set up stock areas for daily use. Revise daily schedules to accommodate patient flow, as assigned. Handle properly the disposal of infectious and/or hazardous waste; proper disposal of expired or wasted medications following departmental policy; comply with OSHA regulations and Universal Precautions. Ensure quality assurance within the back office areas. Act as a clinical lead for the back office staff; confirm and sign off on any medications given by back office staff within their scope. Complete lab slips; collect, label and transport laboratory specimens. Set up sterile trays, procedure trays and dressing change materials as needed by practitioner. Inventory emergency kit once every four weeks or as needed. Daily quality check of oxygen tanks, ambu bags and Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Maintain narcotic lockbox and narcotic log on a daily basis. Ensure all medication logs are up to date. Obtain lab tests and other reports for practitioner review. Ensure that patient documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner; forward as appropriate. Notify hospital or skilled nursing facility personnel of practitioner s orders. Complete and submit Treatment Authorization Forms, Consultant Report Forms, protocol logs, and request forms following appropriate procedures. Perform other tasks as assigned.
