The Neuroscience ICU is a twenty-two-bed critical care unit divided into a West (12beds) and East (10 beds). The Neuroscience ICU team is present to manage the patient 24/7 RNs, Attending intensivist, Fellows, Residents, APP, RT. The unit provides critical care and post-operative recovery services in a family centered, cost-effective environment, to patients with neurological impairment. The Neuroscience ICU is a critical part of the University of Maryland Comprehensive Stroke Center. We are a regional center of excellence dedicated to providing extensive management of patients with cerebrovascular disease. One of just three comprehensive stroke centers in the state, UMMC uses a multi-disciplinary approach while treating complex stroke patients. Other diagnosis included Subarachnoid Hemorrhage due to aneurysm, Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Status Epilepticus, Craniotomy for Brain Tumor resection and complicated neuromuscular diseases. The Neuroscience ICU uses the latest advances in technology to monitor brain structure and function including CT scan, advanced MRI imaging, ultrasound, continuous EEG monitoring (available 24/7), cutting-edge multimodal hemodynamic monitoring, jugular venous oxygen saturation, cerebral oxygenation, measurement of intracranial pressure, direct measures of regional brain metabolism and oxygenation (Microdialysis). The nursing staff are competent in performing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and plasma exchange (PLEX). In extremely complicated cerebral vasospasm patients, we utilize intra-aortic pump interventions. We prevent secondary brain injury with state-of-the-art targeted temperature management devices, medications, and interventional neuroradiology and neurosurgical interventions. We offer our patients opportunities to take part in the latest ground-breaking research trials to improve the future of neurocritical care and outcomes. Patient and family engagement are a priority of the interdisciplinary Neuroscience ICU team. The patient and families are provided education regarding the disease process, the treatment plan, the expected outcome, and opportunities for engagement activities like attending daily patient rounds and our newest Facebook support group.
