The L&D nurse collaborates with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide safe, compassionate, and effective care to both mothers and newborns. The unit typically sees 100-120 births per month, totaling 1300-1400 annually. AWHONN guidelines for staffing ratios are followed. RNs are required to titrate drips, including oxytocin, insulin, and magnesium. Nurses will not circulate in the operating room or recover patients after general anesthesia. There are nursing aides and surgical techs on the unit. Anesthesia is available on site 24/7, while the OB/neonatologist is not. Respiratory therapy equipment, such as CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilators, is used primarily for newborns. Tele-monitoring systems are available, with strips read by tele techs from another unit. Self-scheduling is allowed with weekend commitments every 3rd Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There is no call or standby requirement. There is potential to float to other units as needed, in line with staff nurse rotations. Scrubs are provided, and there is a specific orientation process for the unit.
