It may seem hard to believe but even in paradise all is not well. In what is described as a “perfect storm” of circumstances, the state of Hawaii is proving that even the most attractive locations in the United States are not immune to nursing shortages. You can read about it here.
What amazes me is that the reasons for the shortage of nurses are identical in the middle of the Pacific Ocean as they are in the middle of the contiguous 48 states. Aging workforce, aging general population and a shortage of qualified nursing instructors. While there are solutions being implemented on a location-by-location basis, no one has seemed to be able to develop a comprehensive approach to addressing this growing crisis.
When even Hawaii can’t find enough nurses you know there is a problem.
