It’s National Nurses Day, which means we’re officially kicking off National Nurses Week 2025! To all the incredible nurses out there, thank you. Your unwavering compassion, strength, and dedication to serving others is nothing short of heroic.
Every moment you spend easing someone’s pain, every step you take to advocate for patient care, and every kind word you share makes an immeasurable difference.
National Nurses Week is a special time to recognize the vital role nurses play in healthcare and in our everyday lives. More importantly, it’s a time for you to pause and reflect on the work you do and the lives you touch.
This year, we’re shifting the focus. While flowers, “thank you” cards, and public acknowledgments are wonderful, we want to encourage you to prioritize one important person in your life: YOU.
National Nurses Week History and Significance

National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6 to May 12 each year, concluding on Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Known as the founder of modern nursing, Florence’s legacy is a reminder of the power of empathetic, dedicated care.
Established by the American Nurses Association (ANA) in 1954, National Nurses Week highlights the essential work nurses do and raises awareness about the challenges they face daily. It’s more than a time for gratitude. It’s a platform to advocate for better working conditions, fair compensation, and mental health support for nurses.
Beyond recognition, National Nurses Week is a chance for nurses to reflect on their contributions, celebrate their resilience, and feel valued as the backbone of healthcare.
Whether you’re a nurse, know a nurse, or have been cared for by a nurse, National Nurses Week is an opportunity to show appreciation and support for the vital role they play in our communities.
Did you know that there are celebration days all throughout the year that are dedicated to different types of nurses? For example, May 6th is known as National Nurses Day or National Registered Nurse Day and is the start of National Nurses Week.
Other celebration days include a national recognition day for certified nurses on March 19th, National School Nurse Day on the Wednesday during National Nurses Week, and International Nurses Day on May 12th.
This gives us even more opportunities to recognize and thank the various types of nurses in our lives, not only during this special Nurses Week, but year-round!
5 Ways to Celebrate Yourself This National Nurses Week
This week isn’t just about others recognizing your hard work in the nursing profession. It’s also about you giving yourself credit where it’s due. Nurses work long hours under intense pressure, often sacrificing personal time for the well-being of others. That’s why National Nurses Week isn’t just about celebrating nurses. It’s about reflection, gratitude, and self-care.
With that in mind, here are five ways you can celebrate yourself this week and every week.
#1: Prioritize Self-Care (Because You Deserve It)

Take a moment to care for the one person who often gets sidelined in your routine: yourself. Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming. Maybe it’s a long bubble bath, an evening walk in the fresh air, or finally scheduling that massage you’ve been thinking about.
Give yourself permission to unplug from your responsibilities for a day during Nurses Week. Rest, recharge, and do something that nurtures your mind and body. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential.
#2: Treat Yourself to Something Special

Think of how far you’ve come in your career and how much you’ve achieved over the last year. You deserve to celebrate those milestones! Treat yourself to something that feels rewarding, whether it’s that cozy sweater you’ve been eyeing, your favorite meal from a local restaurant, or a small getaway.
You work hard every day. It’s okay to indulge once in a while to celebrate you. Don’t forget that many businesses have sales or discounts available for nurses, especially during National Nurses Week. Take advantage of those deals and treat yourself to something special.
#3: Reflect on Your Nursing Journey

Sometimes, amidst the hustle of caregiving, it’s easy to forget the “why” behind your work. Take some time this week to reflect on the moments that have inspired you as a nurse. Maybe it’s a thank-you note from a patient or a memory of making a difference in someone’s recovery.
You might even find it therapeutic to jot down your thoughts in a journal. Rekindling your connection to your career can reignite your sense of purpose and remind you that your work truly matters.
#4: Celebrate With Your Nursing Friends or Coworkers

Most nurses will tell you that support from coworkers is one of the things that keeps them going. Why not celebrate together? Plan a lunch, host a virtual catch-up session, or simply spend time swapping stories and laughter during a coffee break.
Sharing moments of joy and camaraderie with colleagues or nursing friends can deepen your connection to your team and foster a sense of mutual appreciation. After all, who understands your experiences better than your fellow nurses?
Have a friend from a former travel assignment who’s in another state? Plan a virtual get-together to celebrate from afar!
#5: Do Something That Sparks Joy

Step away from the scrubs and find something that fills your heart with happiness. Maybe it’s revisiting a long-lost hobby, like painting, gardening, or dancing. Perhaps it’s dedicating some time to your family, binge-watching a favorite show, or even embarking on a spontaneous adventure.
National Nurses Week isn’t just about honoring you as a nurse. It’s about celebrating you as a person.
Happy National Nurses Week!
To all the nurses reading this, please know how valued you are. You show up every day with care, patience, and determination, making the world a better place for so many.
While the world says “thank you” to nurses during this special week, we hope this blog inspires you to say “thank you” to yourself too. Caregiving begins within. Take these five ideas, or come up with your own, and make this week truly about cherishing yourself.
You’re a hero today and every day. From the bottom of our hearts, Happy National Nurses Week!
