Nursing Student Life: Meet the 2018 Scholarship Winner

5/5 - (1 vote)

She’s from New Jersey. It’s her first time experiencing nursing student life. She made a selfie video that received more than 1,000 votes, leading her to win a $2,000 scholarship towards nursing school. Meet Julia. Julia is one of many nursing students who applied to the TravelNurseSource “Future U.S. Nurse Scholarship” in 2018. Students had to submit a short selfie video explaining why they wanted to be a nurse and how receiving $2,000 could impact their lives. Six finalists then went on to a voting competition on social media, of which Julia was the winner. We surprised Julia with a video phone call to tell her that she won the scholarship. Check it out!

Q & A with Julia | 8 Questions About Her Nursing Student Life

Since announcing her victory, we had the chance to sit down with Julia to learn more about her nursing student life and plans for the future! Here’s what we learned!

Q: What made you decide to go to nursing school?

A: I decided very early (7th grade) that I wanted to be a nurse anesthetist. Of course, being that my mom is a nurse, she inspired me greatly as I grew up going to fairs at the hospital, visiting her, missing holidays with her because she was at work, and all of those things showed me the sacrifices she was making at the job she loved. I’ve seen how rewarding her career has been and it’s pushed me to go in this direction.

Q: What’s your expected graduation date?

A: My expected graduation date is fall 2021.

Q: Do you have a specific specialty you’d like to work in?

A: As I stated earlier, I am still looking to be a nurse anesthetist. I have a few other specialties I may be interested in while getting my hospital experiences such as neurology or pediatrics.

Q: What do you do for fun when you’re not at school?

A: When I’m not at school, I’m usually studying! No surprise, but when I do have time I enjoy spending time with my family the most.

Q: What’s your favorite college course so far?

A: My favorite college courses so far were anatomy and physiology because they truly introduced me to the new career adventure I am pursuing.

Q: How did you learn about the TravelNurseSource scholarship?

A: I learned about the travel nurse scholarship through the TravelNurseSource website!

Q: Have you ever considered travel nursing?

A: I have considered travel nursing before! I especially would be interested in traveling to help out during natural disasters.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say about the scholarship?

A: I am super grateful for this scholarship. The other opponents were amazing, and I think they will be great in their careers! It was nice to hear their stories too and be able to relate to them. I appreciate TravelNurseSource for the opportunity I was given, and I want them to know that this scholarship will truly help me in the Spring 2019 semester. I was in contact with the organization throughout this whole process and they were very professional and kind. Thank you so much to TravelNurseSource and the 1,000+ amazing people that voted for me. Nothing but gratitude towards the people who participated and helped me out!
