Before you know it, you’ll be graduating at the top of your class.

Seven Tips to Succeed in Nursing School

Tips to Succeed In Nursing School

1. Find a Study Group

Studying in groups has been shown to benefit students in all types of educational programs. Nursing is no exception! While many people are hesitant to work in groups, it is really one of the best ways to prepare for quizzes, tests, and exams. However, be sure to find a study group that works for you. Groups that spend more time socializing than studying may actually not be the most effective use of your time. That said, groups composed of other serious students who motivate you to keep working harder will almost always prove beneficial in the end. If you find that your study group isn’t helpful, try to find another one!

2. Recap After Each Class

Taking a moment after every class session to review the material that you just covered is an exceptionally useful way to ensure retention. Whether that means physically writing down some of the most important points that you covered or simply running through them in your mind, forming this habit can make studying for that final exam much easier. Obviously, you won’t always have time to do this immediately following class. However, taking five minutes at the end of every night to think back on what you learned that day is a surefire way to set yourself up for success.

3. Always Ask Why

When you are in nursing school, you have to deal with a lot of content. When you are learning so many different biological processes and procedures it can be overwhelming. What seems straightforward today could very easily be forgotten after months of new material. However, if you understand why the body works in a certain way or why you perform a specific task rather than just how, you are much less likely to forget in the future. Always ask why when you learn something new to help solidify concepts in your mind.

4. Get to Know Your Instructors

This tip is helpful for two reasons. First, your instructors are there because they have information and experience that can be useful for you. Get to know them so that you can learn as much as possible from those who are in a position to teach you. Second, when you get to know your instructors they are bound to get to know you. Depending on your nursing program, it can sometimes be easy to get lost in the crowd of students. Be sure to be a face that your instructors remember by sitting in the front of the class and expressing interest outside of class so that you can get the most out of your time as their student.

5. Develop a Good System of Organization

Organization is important in every aspect of life but especially in nursing school. As you fill your books and binders with notes, staying organized will help ensure that you can always track down the information you need when you need it. However, organization does not just apply to your papers. Being organized with your time will help you have more time to study an enjoy yourself as well!

6. Exercise, Eat Well, and Get Some Sleep!

Possibly one of the most important tips to succeed in nursing school, take care of your health! It is impossible to be successful when you are sick or sleep deprived. Take care or yourself physically and mentally from the beginning. It might surprise you how much more productive those late night study sessions are after you’ve eaten a good meal, gotten a quick workout in, and had a good night’s sleep the day before. Stay focused on your studies and your health and you will be successful in nursing school!

7. Get the Essentials

As a nurse, you’ll want to make sure you also have the supplies you need to be successful in the field. Obviously, you’ll want the correct textbooks and some sturdy notebooks to take notes. However, as you begin to learn in the field, you’ll want to make sure that you have other essentials like scrubs and a good stethoscope! These items will show your educators that you’re prepared and committed to a successful career as a nurse.
