How Will the 2020 BSN Requirement Affect Nurses?

Nursing professionals everywhere are no doubt already familiar with the many different requirements that they must meet in order to obtain the career of their dreams. For the nursing industry, continuing education isn’t something that only certain types of people do – a future in nursing depends on it. A recent initiative has begun that will make the qualifications required for becoming a nurse even more strict, especially as we look towards the future.

What are the 2020 BSN Requirements?

After the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010, it quickly became apparent that the needs for nursing professionals were about to shift in a dramatic way. As more people than ever become insured and obtain healthcare, the need for highly trained and specialized nurses would also increase. Beginning in 2008, a two-year initiative that was jointly launched by the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation began to assess how those needs were likely to change in the future. The initiative was also responsible with developing a plan to make those needs become a reality.

The committee that was formed during the initiative has recommended that the total number of nurses with baccalaureate degrees increase from its current levels to 80% by the year 2020. Additionally, the number of nurses with a doctorate should double by the same time. This is a strict increase in the requirements to become a nursing professional, as these two types of education were not necessarily required in order to gain entry into the profession.

How the 2020 BSN Requirements Will Affect Nursing Professionals

The 2020 BSN requirements have the potential to dramatically affect current nursing professionals. Depending on the position that has been obtained, nurses may have to go back to school in order to continue advancing in their chosen field. If a nurse without a bachelor’s degree tries to shift from one healthcare facility to another, for example, they may find no positions available for nurses without that type of education. The only way to advance would be to return to school to meet the new requirements.

How the 2020 BSN Requirements Will Affect the Future of Nursing

The 2020 BSN requirements will affect the future of nursing in a variety of ways in both the short and long-term. Because the educational requirement changes are still a significant amount of time away, the demand for nurses without bachelor’s degrees is still on the rise. However, when those requirements go into effect, it will certainly become more difficult for individuals to enter the nursing profession. Because of the continued rising costs of education, the 2020 BSN requirements will make becoming a registered nurse a larger financial commitment to the average person. Depending on that person’s financial situation, it could also be cost prohibitive, especially if they are unable to immediately find employment after graduation. Nurses without the specialized education required may also likely need to return to school to continue with their existing employment.
