So long are the days of unflattering and shapeless scrubs. Today, nurses have more options than they know what to do with! As a travel nurse, you don’t have time to waste but your personal style should not be sacrificed. Use this quick reference to help identify your body shape and find scrubs that are most likely to flatter your figure.

The Rectangle

Body Profile: The shoulders and hips are the same width. Little to no waist. Slender/athletic build.

You may not have many natural curves, but you can fake it! Create the illusion of curves with tops that are cinched at the waste or have details that flatter your chest. Don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns like this Urbane top and layers to add more dimension to your simple shape. Pant styles can be flexible as you can pull off various color and cut options but fitted and flared pants like these from WonderWink will complete the look!

The Pear

Body Profile: Narrow shoulders and smaller bosom with larger hips, rear, and thighs.

The goal for women with this shape is to detract attention from the bottom half and create the illusion of a larger and more balanced bust line. Go for longer tops with patterns and details that accentuate the waist and chest like this one. Pair with a slimming dark solid pant.

The Apple

Body Profile: Broad shoulders and narrow hips. Slim legs and thighs with larger bust and abdomen.

If you have an apple-shaped body, you will want to elongate you midsection and make your waist appear smaller. Steer clear of patterns and go for a monochromatic look. Avoid tops that are too tight or baggy–a well-fit scrub top is key. Try a v-neck, mock wrap shirt with an empire waist to create the illusion of a longer torso. Tight or skinny pants will exaggerate your apple figure by making your bottom half look too small so consider a slimming pant that balances with your top half.

The Cello (Hourglass)

Body Profile: Bust and hips are nearly same width. Full bust, shapely legs, and a well defined waist.

If you’re one of the 8% of women who are lucky enough to have this curvy silhouette, flaunt it! Baggy tops and pants will make you appear larger. Do not be afraid to show off those curves in a waist-hugging top with princess seams and a straight leg or subtle flair leg pant.

Style Tips for Men

Men’s scrub options aren’t as overwhelming as women’s. However, retailers are realizing that the plain old style just isn’t cutting it anymore. Look for scrubs with a subtle, yet fashionable, twist that fits your personal style. Also, here are some general pointers to achieve a fresh and professional image:

– If you have a hairy chest, cover it up at work! Pair scrub tops with a crew neck or high v-neck undershirt in a complementary color.

– Be realistic about the size. The fit should be relaxed and comfortable. Not like a trash bag or sausage casing.

– Find tops that are long enough for your torso. When you lift your arms up, your abdomen should not be visible. If your tops shrink up after washing, use a lower heat setting on the dryer or hang to dry!
